Late on Sunday 3 August a neighbour who is dying of leukaemia suffered a nosebleed and needed ice cubes to press against his sinus. I discovered that petrol stations no longer sell ice cubes, and all the pubs and shops were shut. Your night desk man, however, kindly supplied a large bucketful, for which my neighbours and I are deeply grateful.
