30-31 The Market,
When I first went into the shop to order a couple of tankards and a couple of trophies for an awards night they were polite, although I did think the prices were very high. However, when I returned to collect the goods one had the wrong name on and another was mis-spelt. The one with the wrong name they took back to re-do with no fuss, although no apology either and given it meant it wasn't ready for the presentation evening I thought this was poor. The name that was mis-spelt on the other hand they tried to say that I had not written clear enough when in fact the confusion was over a mark placed on the sheet when the assistant had been counting the letters. They denied doing this despite the fact I saw him do it. The name in question was also writting engraved correctly on another piece and what they did write was not even a name. The manager was very patronising throughout and whilst in the end they did take it back, they tried very hard to make me pay extra. Despite their mistake I received no discount and no apology. I would not go back there.
We have been shopping in Oxford for around 20 years and have seen many good shops come and go also many trades have been taken over by large national companies providing poor quailty work (not cheaply i might add) with staff with a couldnt careless attitude. How refreshing it was to see a family business starting out in that long very thin shop at the end of the market providng a range of services and gifts in what can only be described as an old fashioned helpful manner. Directions to other shops, sights, colleges, pubs & restaurants etc. are given freely (none of the i dont knows here). And what joy to see after all these years the same family have moved to a MUCH larger shop within the market much busier but still the same nice people, so what if the Engraver is busy? (perhaps he's doing something right) We allways use them it does take a few days but its a quality product
Initial impressions of the Oxford engraver were fine. The shop was clean, and the examples of their work looked good.
However we were very disappointed with the service offered here. We wanted some glasses engraved as gifts for friends. We had intended to buy our own good crystal glasses to have engraved but were informed that they would only engrave glassware that they sold. Therefore we selected some glassesthat were cheaper but of poorer quality we had intended. We wanted a name (four letters) and a date in number format engraved on each glass. The quote for the engraving was over four times the cost of the glass, and we were to be charged a "setting up" fee for each glass. We had been prepared to pay a reasonable amount for engraving, but relative to the price and quality of the glass we thought this ludicrous.
In addition the person behind the counter seemed did not appear to want our business. We were told repeatedly that they were very busy and may not be able to do any engraving for us because the engraver 'didn't want to do any more at the moment'.
All in all it was a disappointing service. It is a shame because they have a good location and it would be helpful to have a service whereby personalised gifts were available at a reasonable price from helpful staff.
